Master of Arts in English-Thai Translation
M.A. (English-Thai Translation)
Objectives
To equip students with knowledge of theories and principles in translation and job-related knowledge.
To enable students to master translation skills from English into Thai and Thai into English in order to produce
translation works of excellent standard.
To develop students' analytical and critical skills in identifying and solving problems in translation and in evaluating a
translation.
To enable students to conduct a translation research, which will develop the study, research and profession in translation
in Thailand.
The Programme offers two study plans. Graduate students may choose either Plan A or Plan B.
Plan A:
This path of the Programme consists of a coursework and a thesis. Students must take 24 credits of compulsory courses, 9
credits of electives, and 12 credits of a thesis.
Plan B:
This path of the Programme consists of a coursework and an individual study. Students must take 24 credits of required
courses, 15 credits of electives and 6 credits of an individual study.
Comprehensive Examination
Plan A
Students may register for a comprehensive examination after completing 18 credits of coursework. They must have obtained a
minimum GPA of 3.00.
Plan B
Students may register for a comprehensive examination after having registered for 39 credits of coursework. They must
obtain a minimum GPA of 3.00.
Thesis Requirements (Plan A only)
Students may register for a thesis after they have passed the comprehensive examination. They must also obtain a minimum
GPA of 3.00 for all courses taken.
They must also have fulfilled a foreign language requirement (TU GET) before the oral defence of their theses.
Applicant’s Qualifications
Applicants must have received a bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in any field of studies from an educational institute
accredited by Thammasat University Council.
Period of Study
The total period of study may not exceed 10 semesters.

No Grade Point system consists of the following:
P (Pass) and N (Fail) for Comprehensive Exam and foreign language requirement

Course Descriptions
An overview of development in concepts and theories in translation and of the theoretical and practical importance of
translation, in order to understand the ideas behind the translation work. Study of strategies used in effective
translation. Study and analyze the translation process, role of a translator, issues and strategies in translation.
TP.613 Contrastive Studies of English and Thai for Translation 3 credits
A study and analysis of the similarities and differences in Thai and in English, focusing on the relationship between
meaning and form: at the phonetic, lexical, syntactic and discourse levels, and on other elements that affect communication
and translation.
TP.614 Research Methodologies in Translation 3 credits
A study of research methodologies, with an emphasis on the process of conducting a translation research such as defining a
problem area and establishing a hypothesis, collecting and analysing data, and overcoming an obstacle in a translation
research.
TP.623 Thai Usage for Translation 3 credits
A study of various genres and registers of Thai writings. A practice of expository writing of academic, journalistic and
literary texts in application to translation.
TP.624 English Usage for Translation 3 credits
A practice of critical reading in various texts, to understand the content, writer’s intention and tone of English texts.
A practice of writing various genres in English, focusing on thought organization and English usage.
TP.633 Translation: English-Thai 3 credits

A study and practice of translation, from English into Thai, of various texts to acquire basic translation skills. A study
of various translation strategies, problems in translation and possible solutions.

A study and practice of translation, from Thai into English, of various texts to acquire basic translation skills. A study
of various translation strategies, problems in translation and possible solutions.

A study of interesting issues in the field of translation such as the market, copyright, role and ethic of a translator,
editorial work, language choice, and resources in translation.

A study of lexical system and strategies in finding or creating words to the purposes of translation. A practice of
reading for the essences of the original texts in order to find or choose words suitable for each translation.

A study of translation resources, both for content and language, such as consulting experts, libraries, the internet,
dictionaries, and translation tools and computer software, appropriate to the translation texts. A study of possible
problems arising from using such resources.
TP.618 Cross-Cultural Communication in Translation 3 credits
A study of theories in cross-cultural communication; a study and analysis of language as a communicative tool across
cultures, problems and strategies in dealing with problems arising from cross-cultural communication.
TP.736 Literary Translation 3 credits

A study of contents and significant features of literary texts; study and practice translating various genre of literature
such as short stories, novels, cartoons and poetry from English into Thai and Thai into English.
TP.737 Translation in the Mass Media 3 credits
Pre-requisite: TP.612, TP. 623, TP.624, TP.633 and TP.634 or the Lecturer’s Permission
A study of contents and significant features of various texts in the mass media; study and practice translating various
types of texts such as short news reports, editorials, critiques, documentaries and advertisements from English into Thai
and Thai into English.
TP.746 Translation in Science and Technology 3 credits
Pre-requisite: TP.612, TP. 623, TP.624, TP.633 and TP.634 or the Lecturer’s Permission
A study of contents and significant features of various texts in the field of science and technology; study and practice
translating various types of texts such as definitions, laboratory reports, production process, charts and tables from
English into Thai and Thai into English.
TP.747 Translation in Economics and Business 3 credits
Pre-requisite: TP.612, TP. 623, TP.624, TP.633 and TP.634 or the Lecturer’s Permission
A study of contents and significant features of various texts in the field of economics and business; study and practice
translating various types of texts in economics such as finance and banking, and texts in business such as marketing and
management, from English into Thai and Thai into English.
TP.748 Translation in Social Science and Humanities 3 credits
Pre-requisite: TP.612, TP. 623, TP.624, TP.633 and TP.634 or the Lecturer’s Permission
A study of contents and significant features of various texts in the field of social science and humanities; study and
practice translating various types of texts such as political articles, historical documents and field reports from English
into Thai and Thai into English.
TP.749 Translation in Law 3 credits
Pre-requisite: TP.612, TP. 623, TP.624, TP.633 and TP.634 or the Lecturer’s Permission
A study of contents and significant features of various texts in law; study and practice translating various types of
legal texts such as ministerial announcements, verdicts, contracts and law articles from English into Thai and Thai into
English.
TP.800 Thesis 12 credits

Pre-requisite: 8 compulsory and 2 elective courses
A critical study of a translation theory, or a work of a reputable translator or a translation of literary or non-literary
work from English into Thai or Thai into English in order to expand the field of translation.
